This is a great piece of reef aquarium cinematography. I can only imagine what this system will look like once it grows out. Not only is this a fine example of a modern reef aquarium featuring a rimless design, T5 fixture and open aquascape, the frags in this glass box are stunning. How many frags can you count?

Owner handles large Zebra Mantis Shrimp (Do not try this at home!)

Mantis shrimps (actually known as Stomatopods) are an amazing collection of ’shrimps’ -- the smashers, the grabbers, spearers, the big one’s and the small one’s, the brightly coloured ones… It is also a well known fact that these creatures are highly intelligent and can be somewhat destructive and violent. But if you can get past their dangerous bad habits, these animals make amazing pets housed in a species only nano tank (nano tank for most varieties, a Zebra will quickly outgrow most nano tanks!)

With all that said, this video of a Zebra (or Striped) Mantis shrimp, Lysiosquillina maculata, you’ve got to be thinking that the owner is absolutely mad!

Some info on the Zebra Mantis shrimp:

Functional type: Spearer

Range: Indo-Pacific from Hawaii and Galapagos to East Africa

Habitat: Mud, sand and sandy reef flats

Depth: Low intertidal to 10 m

Home: Large, u-shaped burrow reinforced with mucus to bind sand

Diet: Fish, occasional shrimp and crab

Size: 1.5–40 cm (yes, over a foot in length!)

Aquarium Requirements:

Temperature: 22–28° C

Salinity: 33–36 PSU

Cohabitants: Will eat fish

Aquarium size (adult): 20 cm adult, 120 l

Aquarium substrate: Sand bed at least 1.5 times as deep as the animal is long

Banded Clinging Crab on Florida Ricordea

The guys over at CoralMorphologic have delivered yet another stunning piece of reef cinema. Take a look at this video:

The video shows the crab alternating between preening its own algae covered carapace and the fluorescent tentacles of the Ricordea florida on which it lives. It is possible that the crab may ingest some of the polyps’ mucus as an occasional food source.

Scooter blenny (Synchiropus ocellatus) caught spawning on film

It’s strange how we as aquarists find spawning behaviour of our fish so fascinating. Perhaps it’s the idea that we never expect to see fish ‘doing their thing’ within the confines of an aquarium. Seeing a pair of fish do the spawning ritual is one thing, but how often do you capture it on film to share it with the world? This clip showing a pair of Scooter Blennies (Synchiropus ocellatus) was already posted on Reefgeeks by Nano Geek.

Robert van Tilburg’s Floating Coralscape 50g Reef at four months

If you’re not familiar with Dutch reefer, Robert van Tilburg (otherwise known as Robertus on various forums) and his 50g reef, then you’re in for a visual treat. This video shows of the 2nd interation of this very successful aquarium. The aquascaping is somewhat unique in that it’s pretty much ‘floats’ in the tank.
