Fluval Edge gets TMC AquaRay Mini LED 500HD upgrade, a step by step guide.

I recently upgraded the lights in my Fluval Edge 46litre nanoreef. I opted for the TMC Aquaray Mini LED 500HD unit as it was the right size to fit the existing lighting compartment of my Fluval aquarium. Here’s how I accomplished this quick and simple upgrade.

Step 1

Remove the lid from the tank. This will need to be cut for the light to fit in. You will need to remove the rear section of the lid. I used a hacksaw and multi tool.

Step 2

Fit the included brackets to the light tile and place in the hood. Mark out were you will need to drill the fixing holes. Remove the tile and carefully drill the holes through the mesh big enough for the plastic bolts to fit through.

Step 3

Place the tile inside and attach to the hood with the plastic bolts that it comes with.

Step 4

To remove the old light arm, lift the arm up and remove the 4 recessed screws, 2 each side.
Once the screws have been removed pull the 2 halves of the arm apart and slip them off of the hinge.

Step 5

Now you will need to remove the cable for the old light arm. This is attached in the rear column with a P clip. You will have to remove the pump and reach down to release the cable from the clip. The cable can then be disconnected from its socket and the light arm can be pulled clear of the top along with the power adaptor socket through the bottom of the column.

Step 6

All that’s is then left to do is feed the cable through the column for the new light and put the lid back on the tank. Due to limited space the lid will need to be pulled forward clear of the pump.

Final result

In my opinion, the TMC Mini tile unit is a vast improvement over the stock lighting, my corals have already started responding favourably.
I have a TMC Reef White 1000HD unit on its way so will be trying that next, stay tuned.
