Julian Sprung interview – have American’s led the way for nano reefkeeping?
Our good friend over at GlassBox-Design.com recently published an interview he did with Julian Sprung. Julian has some interesting things to say, but his comment on American’s having led the way in terms of nano reef keeping really got me thinking.
Nano reefs and nano aquariums are an interesting trend. They’ve really started to take off in Europe and Japan now, but the concept and popularity was developed here in the U.S. Now it is an entire subset within the industry.

Perhaps I am biased, but I do think the popularity of nanos, largely starting in the form of nano-cubes, really took off in the U.S.. Julian’s 15g tank was a prime example of what could be achieved in a small space.
What size restrictions you put on a nano are also of importance. e.g. In other parts of the world 30 to 50g tanks are very popular, whereas in the U.S. reef scene I see there is a significant gap in aquariums between the sub-20g to 75g plus range.
Being from the uk I would tend to agree when you look at the level of equipment that is available over there compared to here.
