The FormosaRay HI-POWER 3W / 5W LED unit

It’s no secret that the LED aquarium lighting market is really starting to grow, it seems as if a new fixture pops up everyday. While browsing various LED options available, I stumbled across Thortekand must say some of their fixtures look really impressive – look out for the “Sports car type back lights”!

The latest product, The FormosaRay, was announced earlier this month:

Formosa Hi-Power 3w / 52 LED fixture

Formosa Hi-Power 3w / 52 LED fixture

Formosa Hi-Power 3w / 52 LED fixture2

Formosa Hi-Power 3w / 52 LED fixture2

They have many other fixtures available, and these could really make a great alternative lighting option for a nanoreef aquarium.

Here is a breakdown of the LED’s they use in their fixtures:

(1) Hi-power White LED lamps:
Like the use of MH, the Hi-power LED lamps create sparkling ripples in your tanks when they are installed as the main light source. Moreover, they can penetrate deeply into water just like what can be done by the MH. Unlike other light sources, LED lamps give almost no radiant heat to the water. Therefore, one can save lots of money and energy for the use and/or operation of air conditioner or chiller.

(2) Hi-power Blue LED lamps:
The 20000K (470nm) blue LED lamps create a aquarium environment similar to deep water. The blue LED light is proved to be powerful on the coloration of the corals which contain fluorescent proteins. The exact 470nm wavelength efficiently excited the fluorescence and therefore makes the coral more brilliant than under the illumination of other light sources, such as MH, T5 or T8.

(3) Regular Red modules:
The use of red LED light can enhance the coloration of fishes, especially for those with red or yellow colors. Otherwise, the addition of red LED also compensates the region of light of larger wavelength.

(4) Moonlight modules:
The Low-power type blue LED modules are very suitable lighting source for nighttime display. With the moonlight modules, your tank will be no longer in the dark in the midnight!

Specification of LED lamps:
The LED lamps installed in the fixture are Hi-power (1.25W per lamp) type. Six lamps are assembled in one strip (11″ in length 1″ in width). The white lamps are of 6300K, and the blue ones are of ~20000K (470nm in spectrum). There are also red and moonlight modules (Low-power type). The red modules are used to (i) fill the spectrum, and (ii) enhance the color of the marine fishes.
